10 Bollywood movies to cheer you up in Quarantine!

Well, it was supposed to be the top 10 Bollywood Movies, but we added 1 more for good luck! During this period of uncertainty and lockdown, Bollywood is sure to bring a burst of light we need to lift our spirits. With all the music, singing and dancing it’s sure to get us reminiscing on our childhood and have the whole family gathered around the TV screen.  This felt like an almost impossible task as we easily had over 100 on our list but we got there in the end! We have listed our top 10 Bollywood movies to cheer you up. As most of us have some spare time on our hands we have the opportunity to surf through catalogues of movies. I’ve recently heard the term “Netflix & Quarantine” used the past couple of weeks and yes, during this downtime of reflecting and relaxing, why not tune into some Bollywood films? There are plenty to choose from on Netflix, Amazon and Sky to get you in a good mood! Grab a bag of popcorn, (or a bowl of some homemade Kheer if that’s your thing) and get lost in the world of Bollywood for a couple of hours. 

1. Dilwale Dhulania Le Jayenge (1995, PG) 

When Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) meets Simran (Kajol) in Europe, it isn’t love at first sight but when Simran moves to India for an arranged marriage, love makes its presence felt. Raj tries to win over Simran’s family so the couple can marry, but Simran’s father has long since promised her hand to his friend’s son. The film was shot in India, London and Switzerland. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was one of only three Hindi films in the reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, and was placed twelfth on the British Film Institute‘s list of top Indian films of all time. 2. 3 idiots (2009, rating 12)


So Aamir Khan is a favourite of ours and if we had it our way we would have all of his movies in this list. However, if you’re looking for an inspirational comedy with serious undertones and a great message you can take away, then 3 Idiots is a great choice. It is a heartfelt film, focusing on friendship and growing up. It follows the story of three friends reflecting on their college days. The brilliance of Aamir Khan is showcased in this masterpiece. 3 Idiots will guarantee lots of laughter, joy, tears, drama and passion. So sit down and enjoy, but make sure you have a tissue nearby as it may come in handy. Plus it is now Available on Netflix!

3. Khoobsurat (2014, PG)


We had the pleasure of working with Sonam Kapoor in 2017 so If you’re looking for a light-hearted Romcom with a loveable character, then Khoobsurat is the movie for you. Sonam Kapoor plays a quirky character that will have you falling in love with. She plays a fun-loving doc hired to assist an injured king played by the dashing Fawad Khan. In true Bollywood style, she tries to challenge the family’s traditions and end up falling for the king. The playful narrative and storytelling make this an uplifting and family-friendly film. This movie is available on Netflix.

4. Chachi 420 (1997, PG)


If you love the classical Robin Williams movie Mrs Doubtfire, then you are sure to love this Bollywood film inspired by it. The comedy embodies the same message from the popular Hollywood movie and is the perfect film to watch to put a smile on your face! Starring Kamal Hassan and Tabu this movie is available to purchase online.

5. Jab We Met (2007, Rating 13+)

A romantic comedy that will have you laughing all the way through. The adversities of Aditiya’s business played by Shahid Kapoor bring him to the brink of suicide. One day he bumps into wandering aimlessly, he boards a train and bumps into the heroine of the movie Geet. Kareena Kapoor plays a very charming and likeable character, her portrayal of Geet is brimming with life and energy. It is a movie with an enjoyable journey. Available to watch on Amazon Prime.

6. Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na (2008, Rating 12)


Soft-spoken Jai (Imran Khan) and spitfire beauty Aditi (Genelia D’Souza) couldn’t be more different-but their family and friends know they’re a perfect match. This movie talks about love and friendship. Although the storyline is nothing new to Bollywood films, it is definitely a film to watch. The movie features some very vibrant and entertaining characters. It is a light-hearted movie, that will have you smiling throughout and choking with laughter at some scenes. No spoilers! Available to watch on Netflix.

7. Namastey London (2007, PG) 


Namastey London is one of the best movies to portray family values and the South Asian diaspora. To Jasmeet (Katrina Kaif), Arjun (Akshay Kumar) is a country bumpkin from the village back home. But this all-Indian boy may teach her a thing or two about her homeland and her heart. It has very light and comical storytelling that also highlights Indian cultural values. The film features a very enjoyable soundtrack that will have you singing along. The bonus is that this movie is available to watch on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

8. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003, Rating 12)

Of course, we had to add a Shah Rukh Khan movie to the list! Although this film is at times a tearjerker. It is a film to watch, it has a great narrative with a very charismatic and likeable cast starring Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan and Jaya Bachan. An uptight MBA student falls for the charismatic neighbour Aman (Shah Rukh Khan), who charms her troubled family. But he has a secret of his own which changes their lives forever.  Embroiled in all this, Naina’s (Preity Zinta) best friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan) reveals his love for her. The soundtrack is a memorable one that will have you joining in, a classic being pretty woman! Sometimes a little cheese is just what the doctor recommends for putting you in a good mood. 9. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011, PG)

The perfect movie that encapsulates the bond of friendships between Kabir, Arjun and Imraan. During a road trip in Spain, the three characters learn lessons about themselves and each other that will change them forever.  It takes you on a journey that has you laughing with each character and is an overall funny and light watch. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akthar and an appearance by the stunning Katrina Kaif. The bonus is, this movie is available on both Netflix and Amazon Prime.

10. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003, PG)


A superbly hilarious film starring Sanjay Dutt.  This film is the perfect remedy for anyone who needs cheering up. With laughs from start to finish. It is the story of a gangster who sets out to become a doctor in order to make his father proud. This classic is a great film that the whole family can enjoy. 11. Piku (2015, not rated)

Piku is a comical, lighthearted story of an ageing hypochondriac father and his strong-headed daughter. Baba (Amitabh) emotionally blackmails his daughter Piku to take them on a road trip from Delhi to his hometown Kolkata. This beautiful film about familial bonds covers serious issues such as ill-health and gratitude. This film will cheer you up whilst also allowing you to reflect on your own relationships. Starring the fabulous Deepika Padukone and the legend Amiatabh Bacchan. Available on Amazon Prime.

  2. Yess whatt a great article. It shows all the best movies and it takes me back to my childhood. What era that was. And in this new era i like khubsoorat movie alot. Fawad khan acting was love.

Bollywood movies have always got me glued to my screen. since i was a child, i have always enjoyed the plot, the characters and the action. i love how the hero would do anything to protect his family, honor and the innocent people. the best part about Bollywood is when they start singing and dancing.
